1. Capable of entry-level media work in one of the major’s areas of emphasis.

The work of a journalist requires a variety of skills that can only be developed and improved with time and consistent practice. Throughout my time in the journalism program, I was able to become more familiar and competent with the process of preparing, editing, writing and producing content for news media outlets. Each evidence below is proof that my assignments have challenged me to think critically, creatively and independently. To express myself clearly, both in writing and orally. To carry out journalistic research and interviews, and to competently use technology that is appropriate to the medium.

My first piece of evidence is a project that I completed as part of a multimedia news package collaboration called, “When The Waters Rise.” The assignment included choosing a topic that fell under the category of Coastal Resilience. I chose to report, specifically, on water pollution from non-point sources. The goal was to learn about the impacts of climate change in our environment and to produce a news story piece using a medium of choice. To create this broadcast-style piece: I interviewed two URI professors, shot b-roll, gathered all my footage, transcribed, and edited the piece together.

My second piece of evidence is a story about a young girl facing a life-threatening condition called adnexal torsion. The assignment given to write this story required writing a news story that is "Sunday Best" worthy; one that you would see on a Sunday newspaper. To write this story, I conducted an over the phone, video-interview, with the victim of the condition. Then, I transcribed the video/audio file, and selected quotes from the transcription to edit and put the piece together.

The last piece of evidence is a story about a toddler who suffers from a rare genetic disease called Norrie. Putting this story together required interviewing, meeting at different times, constant communication, finding ways to set up camera equipment on my own, as well as, shooting and editing.
